How It All Began

We are a family of two adults and three children. When we decided to get a bunny, we quickly learned that there is now a whole new perspective on bunnies as pets.

Thinking about getting a bunny? Read this first!

Our initial understanding of bunnies and their potential was shaped by experiences from the 90s, when bunnies were kept in relatively small cages and taken out occasionally. We didn't intend to keep him in a small cage most of the day, but we still thought a cage was necessary. So, we wasted money on buying a large cage for Frans.

We knew of bunnies that had their own "rooms." Before getting Frans, we decided he would be allowed to run freely in the living room as long as we were home and awake. The rest of the time, he would be in the cage, as we thought it was the safest option for him. When he arrived, he was already litter-trained and had only a few accidents initially. We were surprised at how "good" he was at using his litter box.

One evening, as usual, we locked him in the cage for the night. In the morning, we found him sitting on the rug outside the cage! He had opened the door by himself! Family and friends suggested we put a padlock on the door. Why? Instead, we left it open all the time so Frans could come and go as he pleased. Eventually, we removed the cage door. Today, Frans still has the cage base, filled with litter, straw, hay, and his little house. This is a great solution for us because it gives him plenty of space to mess around with his hay, and the low edge keeps most of it from ending up on the rug where the kids often play. He is free to roam around the apartment, with his only restrictions being the front door (and the balcony door when we can't keep an eye on him). He often hops into the kitchen, the kids' rooms, the hallway, the bedroom, and even up on the beds... a free bunny life, simply!

We are so happy that we embraced a free-roaming lifestyle for Frans. We hope to inspire you to do the same!

Now we have also welcomed a female bunny to the family, a Holland Lop named Luna.
